What is Bell’s Palsy?

It is characterized by an acute paralysis of Face related to “Inflammation” and swelling of the facial nerve within facial canal or at stylomastoid foramen.

Aetiology of Bell’s Palsy

Uncertain but may be associated with viral infections for example :-

  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Infectious mononucleosis
  • Herpes simplex and Varicella Zoster
  • Epidemics of Bell’s palsy occur sporadically
  • Mumps
  • Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (coxsackievirus)
  • Cytomegalovirus infections

Symptoms of Bell’s Palsy

Uncertain but may be associated with viral infections for example :-

  • Drooling
  • Headache
  • Pain of variable intensity over the ipsilateral mastoid precedes weakness, which develops over a 48 – hour period.
  • Impairment of taste
  • Hyperacusis and salivation depend on the extent of inflammation and will be lost more severe cases
  • Lacrimation is seldom affected
  • Heightened sensitivity to sound.
  • Pain around the jaw or in or behind your ear on the affected side

Risk Factors of Bell’s Palsy

1. During Pregnancy, especially during the third trimester, or who are in the first week after giving birth.
